EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
