Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
