Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
